Bubba's Light is honored to partner with the Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department, family and friends to host the Celebration of Life for Lt. Matthew Piontkowski.
Lt. Matthew Piontkowski started his career in Northeast Ohio before moving south. He was hired by Horry County Fire Rescue in 2010. After many years of service, he secured a position with Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department (MIGCFD) in South Carolina. Matt was a former president of Myrtle Beach Professional Firefighters Local 2994. In addition to being a firefighter, he was certified in ocean rescue, a SWAT team paramedic, brother, mentor, friend and coworker to many first responders in Horry and Georgetown counties. He left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered throughout his career and life.
On July 15, 2023, two events, a Memorial Paddle-Out and a Celebration of Life Reception will be held in his honor.

Lt. Matthew Piontkowski was a long-time member and integral part of the Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department Water Rescue Team. He operated in all disciplines, Surf, Boat, and Hurricane Response. Due to his dedicated involvement, a Beach Procession and “Paddle-Out” memorial has been planned. At this memorial, Lt. Piontkowski’s cremains will be spread in our Ocean Waters near his beloved Fire Station 77. In attendance will be Matt’s close family, friends, neighboring depts., and the MIGCFD family.
Rescue Beach Units, Rescue Ski, and Rescue or Fire Boats will be in attendance from depts. around the Grand Strand for the procession in and out of the memorial. The memorial paddle-out ceremony starts at 10:00 am on July 15th at Azalea Access. Longboards and surfboards will be on site for anyone wishing to paddle out, provided by Village Surf. Boat space is very limited. Any requests can be sent to BC Moore.
The evening reception starts at 6:00 pm at Inlet Affairs in Murrells Inlet, SC. We hope you will gather for food and drinks with his family and friends to share your favorite memories and stories while celebrating the life of Lt. Matthew Piontkowski.
